Happy New Year!
As with all New Years come the resolutions on the thing we should and shouldn't do.
Besides the fact that I would be in a better place after I loose a few pounds (quite a few...),
I find myself in a transitional point of my career which is still in progress.
So with that said, I guess my resolution would be to continue with what is working and discontinue what hasn't been working. With that said, I am offering Web hosting, for one year for only $99! This includes 50 Meg of space, domain name is free upon payment , and up to 4 e-mail acounts for this domain. For more details see the Host your website setion of the site.
Simpler Days
When I started working with computers, the IBM PC AT was being released,
I was one of those in line to receive the latest in computer technology... 1 meg of memory
and a 20 meg hard drive which was HUGE at the time. Today we have memory sticks that hold more power
then that computer, and that is what makes this generation so exciting. Yes what you buy may
be "out of date" in 6 months, but if it works for you, it is a good technology.
I am still using a computer which is easly 5+ years old. works very well for what I am using it for. Don't
get caught up in needing the latest and greatest. In January's newsletter I will discuss how you can make
simple changes to your computer that will help boost it's performance while saving you ALOT of money!
On that same computer there was a development package included Qbasic which was included in the operating system. Along with it I found a book that taught you how to program in Qbasic and one example that sticks with me was the turtle with a pen on it's back. You the programmer had to tell the turtle exactly when to drop the pen, how many steps to take, then when to pick up the pen. I won't be going that crazy, but I will be adding alot of references in the developers corner for those who have space on our servers and enjoy developing there own sites.
An ounce or prevention...
I understand you feel like it is something beneath you to do such trivial and mondain things like backing up your data, but like many people have found in the past, your data is more valuable then any financial price you can place on it, for example, do you really thing you are going back on vacation to the same place and at the exact same moment, beable to recreate the pictures you lost on the hard drive that is now a better paperweight then storage device.
It is very simple, you have the operating system and applications stored in a safe place, you only need to back up any programs you downloaded, which inclused music you bought. Then save all your data to the My Documents folder, and then say every weekend while doing something else, burn a CD of all your data, then place that in a sleeve and put it with all your other software. Just be aware that you may have more data then CD. CD's are 650 meg while DVD's can write around 4.7 gigs. After a couple times you will have a good feeling for it. and when your hard drive crashes, you will be in a much beter place.
